Alton Bay Craft Fair on Lake Winnipesaukee

The first weekend of September found us in Alton Bay, NH, right on Lake Winnipesaukee. It was a beautiful warm Labor Day weekend, and there were lots of people out shopping, before they had to head back to their homes and jobs. The craft show lasted three lovely days, and there was no rain, until the last day just before the show closed. We met a few repeat customers that have bought soap from us at other shows, some that had heard we were going to be there on the Craft Fair Website, some that have never heard of Goats Milk Soap and some that love it! We had a wonderful weekend and were able to tell those that had not heard about Goats Milk Soap how good, creamy, smooth and healing it is for their skin.

With all the flooding in Vermont from Hurricane Irene, the normal 3 hour route took us nearly 5 hours. But since then, more roads have opened and many more are due to open soon. Our next show coming up is in Poultney, VT. Come visit us at the Fall craft Extravaganza!

Cleaning with Garland Goat Soap

It was a lovely warm day here in Vermont, and perfect for cleaning some very valuable and necessary “things” for the business! So here is where we find Emily, the main care taker of the goats.

Emily is very faithful with keeping up with things like this! She loves caring for the goats and it is wonderful to have clean goats!

The soap works really well on animals! The oils and the other enriching ingredients in the soap make them smell wonderful and have smooth, shiny coats.

Lavender Essential Oil in Soap!

Everyone knows that lavender essential oil has a lovely scent and is very soothing and calming. What you may not know, however, is that it also helps numerous ailments. Lavender essential oil can help relax tense nerves, calm anxiety, depression, and nervous exhaustion. A few drops of lavender essential oil on a pillow or cotton ball can bring relaxation to those who struggle with stress or sleeplessness. Kid Guessing Contest-2011

It is kidding season here at Garland Goat Soap- one of our favorite times of the year! We love when all the kids (that’s the term for baby goats) are born. Have you ever enjoyed a baby goat? If not, you don’t know how cute they are! At every birth, we have a whole crowd of excited spectators for the wonderful event. Everyone wants to get a chance to hold and pet the kids. Though I have witnessed many goat deliveries, the whole miracle of birth never ceases to amaze me! The display of God’s incredible creation is truly shown forth at every birth!

Winter in the Snowy Green Mountains of Vermont

These past winter months have been exceptionally wonderful! We have gotten three feet of snow over the winter weeks which is excellent for sliding and the cold weather for skating on our ice rink in the back yard!

We have had a nice winter break from the Christmas Season and are now getting into full swing again with soap making and planning for the upcoming markets and craft shows. We are going to be involved in some big events such as making soap favors for a wedding in June.

Here are just some of the many favors we will be making! So attractive!

Also demonstrating soap making at the Shelburne Museum’s grand opening on May 15. Before we know it, spring will be here and Garland Goat Soap will be picking up speed.

Last week we made a few batches of soap but ran out of the 100% pure olive oil, so today we went and purchased a nice supply of olive oil to last us a little while! We have all of the necessary ingredients now to make more goat milk soap. Touche is producing plenty of milk for the soap and also for our own personal use. We use it in making yogurt, keifer, and many other things excellent for your health. We are also planning on making several batches of soap tomorrow, and some of the scents that we plan to make include our number one sellers, Lavender, Lemongrass, Peppermint, and Orange.

Making Favors for a Wedding

This year we have been asked if we could make favors for a large wedding! The wedding will be taking place in June so we are already planning for it as it takes a long time to make, cure and package all the small bars! We are using smaller soap molds in the designs of Maple leaf, Oak Leaf and Aspen. It is fun to plan for something like this.

Merry Christmas!

Greetings,

It has been a very busy Christmas season for Garland Goat Soap of Vermont! We are all very grateful for the business that we have gotten and are enjoying the break that we have for the next couple of weeks. The month of December was full of Christmas fairs where we sold a lot of our all~ natural goat milk soap, we especially enjoyed meeting new friends.

Our inventory is beginning to fill up again but that doesn’t mean that we stop making soap! Right now their are 15 shelves of various kinds of soaps curing.

I have also been busy with our little herd of Alpine does! Touche still is the sole producer of the goats milk that we put in our soap. She is a very sweet goat and especially loves milking time.

Elli is also a very happy goat and enjoys jumping around in the snow with our two 7 month old kids! We bred her this fall and she should have her kid(s) in mid April!

May and April are still the life of the herd. They are both very sweet and love it when I give them their grain and hay. They especially enjoy playing in the snow and chasing each other around.

With the busy holiday season quickly approaching, we want to fill you all in on what’s happening with Garland Goat Soap of Vermont. As we have been acclimating ourselves to running this business, we have fallen behind on updating our blog. Hopefully we will get on top of things soon. We have been making our appearance every week at the Brandon Farmers Market for several weeks now and boy are we getting excited! Customers are returning to buy more soap because they are sold on our all-natural goat milk soap. They are buying several bars for gifts and taking it afar, spreading it across the country. So many are commenting that this is the best soap they have ever used. Some customers with skin conditions are noticing improvements to their skin after using Garland Goat Soap. We asked the Lord to bless our business, and He has blessed it abundantly. We are happy to be making a product that is wholesome, healthy, and all-natural. Thank you all for your encouragement.

A Sudsy Day!

We couldn’t put it off any longer. Even with the stifling heat and humidity we have been living with these past couple of weeks, our sales have been generous enough that our inventory was telling us that we had to make soap and we had to do it soon! Early Tuesday we gathered in the kitchen with our soap making supplies and began.

We use pure beeswax in our All Natural Goat Milk Soap because it gives a solidness that prolongs the life of the bar.

Sodium hydroxide is used to trigger the saponification of the ingredients. We like to say that we simply put the right ingredients together and then let them make the soap! Mom mixes the sodium hydroxide with distilled water and goat’s milk. At the same time we melt and mix a special blend of oils and beeswax together. We use olive oil, palm oil, vegetable oil, vitamin E oil, and coconut oils to insure that our soap is full of good things as well as pleasant to use. Olive oil moisturizes while providing protection against the harsh climate your skin must face every day. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and natural preservative; we use coconut oil to create firm bars that really give you a great lather.

Everything needs to be cooled before anything can be mixed together and this requires a lot of stirring!!

While Mom is busy mixing the oils, wax and sodium hydroxide , Pamela is going to add the essential oil. We add these all natural, scented oils at the end to ensure that everything has been mixed well before hand.

These are our unique soap molds They are responsible for the delightful shapes we are able to offer to our customers. Our most popular designs are the dogs, goats and roosters!

Here, Nathan is carefully pouring the liquid soap into measuring cups so that we may then carefully pour it into the molds. Sometimes, no matter how careful we are, we end up pouring too much soap into the molds and then – our molds overfloweth.

Look at how carefully Pamela and Mom are filling the molds!! We are thankful for their steady hands.

After the molds are completely filled, we place them on a table in our ’soap room’. We use freezer paper between the layers and then cover the whole lot of them with an old comforter. The heavy blanket keeps the heat in while the soap begins the process of curing.

Emily is our appointed record keeper and she reported that we produced 371 bars of soap that day! What a lot of work, but we had a very good time and now our inventory is on its way to being restocked. According to Nathan’s records, we are half way to being completely stocked. We are looking forward to another soap making day in the near future.
